Job profile

Air pollution is a chronic problem in large cities all over the world, including both Mexico City and London. Researchers from the School of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Mathematics at QMUL have partnered with Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) in Mexico City to develop the SAPIENS project. This project is developing a proof-of-concept air quality prediction system that will provide hyper-local, dynamic air quality forecasts for Mexico City using existing open data sources. In particular, openly available traffic intensity data sourced from mobile phones will be used to mitigate the lower density of sensors in Mexico City.

The SAPIENS project is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the international and interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful applicant will be expected to make significant personal contributions to the SAPIENS programme, improving the datasets and the databases built for the project and developing the data analysis and the data-driven physical model connecting the traffic with the air pollution information.

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in a scientific subjects (such as, but not limited to physics, applied mathematics, or computer science). Computing skills and a basic experience in Machine Learning are essential and knowledge of databases is desirable. The post will be located at the Queen Mary Mile End Campus in London but may require travel to other locations in the UK and to Mexico. The SAPIENS project will enable collaborations with the activities of Alan Turing Institute both at data and at the modelling levels.

The post is funded by the QMUL Challenge Led Global Research Collaboration Initiative for 6 months and is full time, starting as soon as possible. Starting salary will be from £31,613 - £34,220 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave [pro rata] and a pension scheme.
