Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Quantum Photonics

Department: School of Physics & Astronomy
Salary: £34,220 - £38,084 per annum (Grade 4)
Reference: QMUL23308
Location: Mile End
Date posted: 09-Nov-2020
Closing date: 14-Dec-2020

Overview:

About the Role

The position is a 12 month post funded through the EPSRC New Horizons scheme which was based on one single criteria “How exciting, high quality and potentially transformative is the research proposed?”. The project is to develop a novel organic lanthanide approach to integrating Single Photon Emitters (SPE) directly onto photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The PDRA will install a new time correlated single photon counting system within our optical spectroscopy laboratories and use state-of-the-art UHV organic deposition system to fabricate samples of a dilute organic lanthanide material dispersed in an organic chromophore, to provide energy transfer from the chromophore to the lanthanide. Films will be produced with an average lanthanide ion spacing of ~1 µm and the SPE from these will be collected using a simple microscope and characterised for SPE purity. In addition, initial experiments will be performed to assess the use of ion implantation as an alternate approach to introducing lanthanide ions into the chromophore. The implantation experiments will be performed at the Royce Institute at the University of Manchester.

About You

Candidates must have a PhD. Due to the short timescales imposed by the EPSRC New Horizons grant scheme we are looking for someone who can “Hit the ground running”. Therefore, the successful candidate should ideally have experience in either organic deposition using molecular evaporation or single photon spectroscopy.

About the Group

The successful candidate will join a team of seven researchers (5 at post-doctoral level) working on different applications of organic lanthanide materials to photonic applications including the development of optical gain using these materials, passivation technologies, PIC design and fabrication and the synthesis of new materials.

About Queen Mary

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the unthinkable.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.

Benefits
