Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Radio Cosmology
Queen Mary University of London, Department of Physics and Astronomy
United Kingdom

A highly-motivated postdoctoral researcher is sought to join the Astronomy Unit, School of Physics and Astronomy, at Queen Mary University of London. The researcher will work under the supervision of Dr. Alkistis Pourtsidou as part of the programme “Exploring the Universe with radio and optical galaxy surveys”, funded by a UK Research & Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship.

The successful candidate will work on several aspects of radio cosmology with the SKA (both SKA-LOW and SKA-MID) and on synergies of radio intensity mapping surveys with optical galaxy surveys. This will involve developing and improving foreground analysis techniques, working on end-to-end data analysis pipelines, developing simulations, and working on fast parameter estimation techniques - more details can be found in the Job Profile.

The successful candidate should have a PhD or a shortly-expected PhD (thesis submitted by job commencement) in cosmology/astrophysics or a closely related subject. Extensive experience with 21cm simulations and/or data is essential for this post.

The Cosmology & Relativity group at QMUL has diverse research interests, including large scale structure and survey cosmology, General Relativity and modified gravity, and early universe cosmology. Group members play key roles in international experiments closely related to the scope of the project, including MeerKAT, SKA, Euclid, and LSST. The successful candidate will be encouraged to interact with members of both the cosmology group and the broader QMUL Astronomy Unit.

The position is available for three years commencing on 1st October 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. Potential applicants are welcome to contact Dr. Alkistis Pourtsidou with any queries about research aspects of the position (a.pourtsidou@qmul.ac.uk).

General information about the School can be found at www.ph.qmul.ac.uk and about the Astronomy Unit at https://www.qmul.ac.uk/spa/astro/.

Applications should consist of:

1) A CV & list of publications, highlighting up to five most relevant works.

2) A research statement (maximum two pages in length). This should describe your previous research experience, your skill set, and your future professional plans. Note that extensive experience with 21cm simulations and/or data is essential for this post.

3) Contact information for two academic references who can provide letters in support of your application. References will be requested for the shortlisted candidates.

Please provide for each referee their name and title, institution, e-mail address and telephone number.

Please consolidate all this information in a single PDF file, and upload it as your CV in our on-line application system.
