Role Description

Department

Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence has a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position available for up to 36 months to support the BBI-JU (H2020) CHAMPION project. CHAMPION will investigate the synthesis of bio-based polyesters for use in coatings, adhesives and home care additives, comparing their performance to current commercially used equivalents. The post is full-time (with flexibility) and will be available from 1 June 2020.

Role

Based in the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, the post holder will conduct individual and collaborative research at the cutting edge of green chemical technologies under the supervision of senior colleagues, working closely with other members of the Green Chemistry group and project partners across Europe.


Where appropriate you will:

  • Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and research proposals
  • Write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations and outreach activities
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students, as well as coordinating the work of small research teams
  • Assist in undergraduate and graduate teaching duties
  • Specific duties include:
  • Conduct research into the synthesis of novel bio-based polyesters to multigram scale, and subsequent post-polymerisation modification to tailor properties, as part of the BBI-JU CHAMPION project
  • Preparing samples and interpreting data using appropriate analytical techniques
  • Interact directly with the CHAMPION consortium, preparing research reports, attending biannual meetings and overcoming research challenges


Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • First degree and PhD in Chemistry
  • Experience and knowledge of polyester synthesis (including polycondensation to multi-gram scale, polyester characterisation and performance testing) and Green Chemistry to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies including modern analytical techniques relevant to polymer characterisation
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to write-up research work for publications and to present to conferences
  • Ability, experience and competency to develop research objectives and carry out individual and collaborative projects, planning and prioritising own work in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to perform practical tasks to a consistently high standard with attention to detail and commitment to high quality
  • Highly motivated and professional work ethic, with commitment to high quality research, a collaborative ethos and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students
  • Ability to work closely with others within a team environment and to work independently using own initiative
