Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Nuclear Physics

Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, Skolan för teknikvetenskap

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Research and teaching conducted at the Department of Physics span from basic science topics in condensed matter physics, nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics to applied areas such as medical imaging, nuclear engineering and nuclear power safety.

The School of Engineering Sciences and the Department of Physics is offering a postdoctoral position in Experimental Nuclear Physics, with a focus on gamma-ray spectroscopy of atomic nuclei far from stability and preparations for experiments using the Decay Spectroscopy (DESPEC) experiment within the NUSTAR science programme at the international research facility FAIR.

Job description

The Nuclear Physics group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking one excellent candidate for position as postdoctoral researcher/ junior researcher in experimental nuclear physics. The focus area of the project is the study of the structure of exotic atomic nuclei far from stability. An important part of the project relates to preparations for experiments with the DESPEC Germanium Array Spectrometer (DEGAS) to be placed at the low-energy branch of the Super-FRS separator at the international Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Darmstadt, Germany. DEGAS is a high-purity germanium detector array for high-resolution spectroscopy of electromagnetic decays from exotic nuclear species. It is a key instrument of the DESPEC experiment at FAIR.

The experimental work, which includes a full physics programme in addition to commissioning and tests of DEGAS detectors, will take place at KTH as well as at FAIR and other international facilities, such as RIBF, RIKEN, Japan; GANIL, Caen, France; the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory, Jyväskylä, Finland; LNL, Legnaro, Italy, and NSCL, Michigan, USA.

Successful candidates are expected to play a leading role in the nuclear physics group's experimental research activities in the study of the structure and decay properties of highly unstable atomic nuclei at radioactive ion beam facilities.

What we offer

  • An international workplace.
  • A leading technical university that creates knowledge and expertise for a sustainable future.
  • Here you get colleagues with high ambitions in an open, curious and dynamic environment.
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a PhD or an equivalent foreign degree in experimental nuclear physics or a related subject, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline (with some exceptions for special grounds, for instance sick leave and parental leave).
Experience from research in international projects is an advantage.
Qualified candidates shall have extensive experience with nuclear physics radiation detectors and data analysis tools for nuclear spectroscopy. A deep knowledge of data analysis for large scale experiments in nuclear structure physics is a special advantage.

Applicants should be highly motivated to perform high-level fundamental research and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

We believe you are self-motivated and persistent. You have the ability to work hard and spend time, energy and commitment to your work, remaining focused on the goals. You take great responsibility and pride in your work and follow the high quality standards required, ensuring nothing is left to chance. You understand the importance of good communication skills and aspire to build fruitful relationships in an international research environment.

An excellent command of the English language is required.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
