The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support development and use of the “Realfast” commensal radio transient detector on the Very Large Array. The position will be involved in Fast Radio Burst observations, data acquisition, follow-up, and interpretation.

 

 

 

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

 

Support, development, and operation of the Realfast commensal observing system.

Lead relevant science projects of interest to the researcher and within the scope of the project, such as multi-wavelength candidate follow-up campaigns, development of an integrated VOEvent trigger release system, host galaxy studies, and cosmological studies with detected candidates.

Develop an independent or collaborative program of research relevant to the goals of the Realfast program, fast radio bursts, and other areas of transient or host galaxy science.

Attend research conferences and read scientific literature to keep abreast of technological advances and current research findings.

Identify and assist with acquisition of funding from public, private, and governmental sources.

Assist with development of novel research proposals for sponsor submission.

Write proposals, papers, and abstracts to attract research funds.

Search scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures most appropriate for research goals.

Perform laboratory and field experiment activities according to protocol.

Attend semi-annual Realfast busy weeks.

Regularly communicate in person or via phone with remote collaborators.

Maintain detailed logs of work related activities, including accurate laboratory records and data on research methods, procedures, and results.

Oversee and direct undergraduate and graduate researchers in the completion of experiments.

Write and present research/study status reports for review and use of the Principal Investigator.

Prepare results of experimental findings for presentation to colleagues and the sponsor; at professional/technical conferences; and/or, for publication in scientific journals, as directed.

 

 

Qualifications

 

PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field

2 Years (including PhD research) experience in any radio interferometry, multi-wavelength observations, fast radio transient work, and/or gamma ray burst host galaxy investigations.

2 years computational coding experience.

An interest in fast radio transients.

Familiarity with Unix-based systems and software.

Ability to automate computational procedures through common programming and scripting languages.

Familiarity with software development (Python or C++ preferred).

Experience in observational astronomical data analysis.

Skill at using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.

Skill at identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

Ability to document and present the results of research.

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of co-investigators from diverse disciplines, orientations, and organizations.
