Postdoctoral Research Associate in Ultrasensitive Cavity Enhanced Polarimetry

Department of Chemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work under the supervision of Professor Grant Ritchie (Chemistry) and Professor Don Fraser (Earth Sciences) on a Horizon 2020 research programme – ULTRACHIRAL – funded by EU for a period of 21 months.

The project involves the design, development and application of new highly sensitive optical cavity based polarimetric methods to understand how the first biomolecules may have developed chiral preference by their interaction with mineral surfaces. Find out more about the Ritchie research group at: http://ritchie.chem.ox.ac.uk/.

You should have a PhD in physical chemistry, optical/laser/molecular physics, earth sciences or a relevant subject area, or have submitted your thesis prior to taking up your appointment.

You should have expertise in the area of ultrasensitive cavity enhanced spectroscopy and working with diode and/or quantum cascade lasers, and be able to (i) adapt existing, and (ii) develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols.

Duties will include: to develop, construct and calibrate two new ultrachiral spectrometers and to carry out experiments on the adsorption of amino acids and other chiral biomolecules on mineral surfaces; to analyse materials using spectroscopy, HPLC, diffraction and other techniques; to adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols; to write and present research papers and publications.

The post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QZ.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 20 March 2019 can be considered.

The University of Oxford and the Department of Chemistry are Athena SWAN Silver award holders. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority candidates, who are under-represented in Chemistry research posts in Oxford.
