UQ Physics is part of the School of Mathematics and Physics within the UQ Faculty of Science. The School is one of the strongest groups of physics researchers and teachers in Australia, with expertise in quantum science, biophotonics and laser science, condensed matter physics and astrophysics. The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS)


The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) has been funded for 7 years, for the period 2018-2024.  This position will work within the Superconducting Quantum Devices Laboratory with Associate Professor Arkady Fedorov and his research group.


The Superconducting Quantum Devices Laboratory aims at establishing fabrication and measurement techniques for the next generation of superconducting nanodevices consisting of superconducting qubits or artificial atoms, microwave transmission lines and high quality superconducting resonators.


About This Opportunity


The primary purpose of this position is to conduct experimental research relevant to the research goals of EQUS and the Superconducting Quantum Devices Laboratory. This includes work on circuit QED architecture for quantum control and measurement as well as on superconducting circuits for quantum hybrid systems.


This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.


Our Ideal Candidate


For Level A, applicants should possess (or be in the process of obtaining) a PhD or equivalent in physics; have demonstrated capacity to carry out research in experimental quantum physics and a strong background in theoretical quantum physics. The desired skills of the applicant include cryogenic measurements, microwave and digital electronics, Python programming, and nanofabrication. Prior experience in research with superconducting quantum circuits will be a plus but is not strictly required.


For Level B, applicants should also demonstrate a strong track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications and research project leadership. Previous postdoctoral research experience with demonstrable research outcomes is expected.

What We Can Offer


This is a full-time, fixed term position at Academic level A or B.


The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $67,542 - $113,728 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $79,024- $133,061.
