Postdoctoral Researcher in Biochemistry

The research group headed by Prof. Martin Jinek at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, is looking for a talented, goal-driven and team-oriented postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in single-particle cryoelectron microscopy. Research in the Jinek laboratory is focused on studying the molecular structures and mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas and related bacterial defense systems, as well as eukaryotic mRNA processing machineries by cryo-EM. These biological questions are investigated using an integrative approach combining structural biology (X-ray crystallography and increasingly cryo-EM), biochemical and biophysical experiments, and functional studies in cell-based models. As of January 2020, the Jinek lab has regular access to a brand-new FEI Titan Krios (equipped with a K3 camera) in the UZH Department of Biochemistry.

Your responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will manage and conduct his/her own independent research project within the main research focus areas of the host laboratory. The researcher is also expected to contribute expertise in single-particle cryo-EM in support of ongoing collaborative projects in the laboratory, closely interacting with PhD students and other postdoctoral researchers in the group. The laboratory has several exciting collaborative projects that would provide excellent training opportunities in complementary structural biology approaches such as X-ray crystallography or biochemical studies.

Your profile

Interested candidates should have hands-on experience in cryo-EM sample preparation and expertise in processing single-particle data. Experience with biochemical methods, especially protein expression and purification in bacteria and insect cells would be an advantage. The applicants must hold a PhD in structural biology, biochemistry, or a related field, and have a strong research track record.

What we offer

We offer a competitive employment package, a supportive and highly collaborative working environment that fosters academic career development, excellent research funding and state-of-the-art infrastructure for structural biology and biophysics. Zurich is a major European research hub that also offers an exceptionally high quality of life.

Place of work

Irchel Campus, Zurich, Switzerland

Start of employment

Employment start date to be mutually agreed.
