3 year Postdoctoral Researcher in Biomedical physics

Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit - NANOMO ( is a highly international research environment presently formed by 5 prof./tenure track PI’s and around 40 other researchers. The main funding sources are the European Union ERC, Horizon2020 programs, EU EIT and ERDF funds, the Academy of Finland, Business Finland and other foreign and domestic funders. The unit coordinates Finnish national participation in the MAX IV synchrotron facility and contributes to the EU-XFEL project. The research topics include electronic structure research especially in clusters and nanoparticles, atmospheric research, functional materials (steel, CO2 negative materials, nanocatalytes for sustainability), biomedical research, mesoscopic quantum structures in materials, and physics didactics research.

The actions of NANOMO on synchrotron (SR) based research and the coordination of Finnish collaboration to MAX IV facility in Lund, Sweden, supports several focus areas of the University of Oulu; “Creating sustainability by materials and systems”, “Molecular and environmental basis for lifelong health” and “Earth and near-space system and environmental change”.

Subject field and description of the position

The position is related to recent renewal of Biophysics research and curriculum to Biomedical physics. The position is strengthens the NANOMO unit collaboration with Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. The infrastructures to be benefitted in the intended research are NANOMO electrophysiology laboratory at Kontinkangas campus as well as the various possibilities available at international synchrotron radiation facilities.

We expect you to actively participate in the international multidisciplinary and intersectorial collaboration network of NANOMO. As a part of the NANOMO unit, your duties also include supervising PhD students as well as supervision of M.Sc and B.Sc theses. We also expect participation in teaching as a part of the physics curriculum.

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D in physics or related area, obtained within the past 10 years

- Experience and knowledge of electrophysiology and synchrotron radiation technique(s)

- Teamwork skills and good communication skills in both written and spoken English

When assessing your qualifications, we will emphasize scientific publications, thesis supervision, activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field in question, scientific work abroad, and other international activities. Furthermore, shown potential in acquiring supplementary funding and teaching experience will be taken as a merit when choosing the scientist. We expect you to have experience from research environments other than University of Oulu.

Terms of employment

The duration of the position is 3 years, beginning on September 1, 2020 at earliest.
A six-month trial period will be applied to the position.

The salary is in accordance with the university salary system (for teaching and research personnel, level 5 – 6). In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be paid for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of the basic salary level for the post. The typical salary for a starting postdoctoral researcher is €3,400 per month.

In addition to the salary, the employed person will be insured by the university and provided occupational healthcare. Finland is known as a country with a high quality of life and good healthcare system.
