Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemistry
University College Cork School of Chemistry

Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Chemistry

12 Months, Fixed-term, Whole-time Post

Position Summary

Polyethylene terephalate (PET) is a ubiquitous plastic commonly used in food packaging and ‘fast fashion’ clothing. Unfortunately, the majority of waste PET is disposed of by either burying in landfill sites or incineratation. This project will focus on developing recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for the chemical recycling of PET bottles. Specific aims of the project will involve: (i) the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts and their application to chemolysis of PET through microwave-assisted and thermal heating, (ii) reaction optimisation and catalyst recovery to minimise the energy required to depolymerise PET bottles and (iii) combining chemical and biological approaches to recycle PET. The position is funded by the Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research Centre (AMBER), in collaboration with PepsiCo, for an initial period of 12 months.

The successful candidate will be based in the School of Chemistry at University College Cork (UCC), but will be expected to work with collaborators in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at UCC and teams of scientists based in other Irish research institutes.

Post Duration: 12 months

Salary: €38,630 - € 45,942 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
