Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Geosciences
University College Cork School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Ireland

Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences

18 MONTHS, FIXED-TERM, WHOLE-TIME POST

Position summary

The Marine Geosciences Research Group, School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Science (BEES), seeking a motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher to complete phase 2 of the BeTAr_drill project.

The candidate will be part of the industry-funded (PIPCO) BeTAr_drill project which aims to map and identify suitable remotely -operated vehicle (ROV) rock-drill target sites based on GIS-based bathymetric data analysis from bedrock exposures on Ireland’s continental margin, characterise and date retrieved samples thereby groundtruthing seismic units to refine/define regional stratigraphic models. Phase 1 has completed a significant data mining exercise which shows a wealth of available data (video ground truthing and rock samples) and has demonstrated the feasibility of the newly developed GIS-based bedrock suitability mapping tool from a target site. Phase 2 will apply and refine the GIS-based bedrock suitability mapping tool for large segments of the Irish Atlantic continental margin including using photogrammetry of target sites, groundtruthing the bedrock mapping with petrographic analysis and datings of physical samples, and correlate existing and reprocessed seismic data to determine seismic units, bedrock properties and ages.

Candidates should hold a PhD in geology and geospatial analysis/GIS. The candidate should ideally have experience in GIS, SfM photogrammetry, IHS Kingdom seismic databasing, and petrology and an interest and knowledge of geomatics, offshore basin analysis, petrology, seismic stratigraphy, and marine geology.

Project Title: Bedrock Target analysis for ROV Rockdrill sampling and existing sample stratigraphic and petrographic verification (BeTar_drill)

Post Duration: 18 months, with a possibility to extend to 22 months
