Position Description


The Department of Astronomy is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to collaborate with Prof. McQuinn on the circumgalactic and intergalactic media. Areas of possible collaboration include numerical simulations of the circumgalactic medium or developing new methods to infer the physical properties of observed CGM/IGM absorption systems. The position additionally involves interacting with the leading circumgalactic observational group of Prof. Werk.

 

The candidate must demonstrate expertise in the fields of the interstellar or intergalactic medium, galaxy formation, and/or chemical enrichment. A successful candidate will have a strong publication record and possess the ability to work independently yet collegially in a team environment. A desire to mentor undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington is preferred.

 

As a member of UW Astronomy, the successful candidate will also have access to our large share of the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m, to the Zwicky Transient Facility and LSST, department computing resources on a UW supercomputer, and to the expertise in Astronomy's Data Intensive Research in Astrophysics & Cosmology (DIRAC) center and UW's eScience program.

 

Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. Qualifications
A Ph.D or foreign equivalent degree in astronomy, physics, or a related subject is required. The initial appointment is for one years, with potential extensions based on performance and availability of funding, and offers competitive salary and benefits. The appointment is expected to start no later than October 2020.
