Position description

Applications are sought for a full-time Project Scientist position. The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary research team in the laboratory of Dr. Kathrin Plath’s Lab in the UCLA Department of Biological Chemistry. The focus of the Plath Lab is on understanding the gene regulatory mechanisms underlying cellular plasticity, differentiation, reprogramming and disease progression. To uncover such mechanisms, the studies in the lab are informed by two key processes: the reprogramming of somatic cells to the pluripotent state and the regulation of nuclear compartments and gene expression by long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs).

We are seeking a Computational Biologist to contribute to existing and new research programs in the group. The project scientist will work on analyzing data from diverse genomics methods to investigate different aspects of embryonic development, differentiation, pluripotent stem cell biology, and reprogramming. The candidate will apply novel and existing computational tools to analyze genomics data generated by the Plath lab or obtained from other resources. The project scientist will work closely with wet lab scientists to design, troubleshoot and interpret experiments and will lead the data analysis and interpretation. In addition to research, the position requires publication of research results, grant writing, and submission of research reports to sponsors. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in bioinformatics and in the analysis of genomics data such as ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, Hi-C, SPRITE, RAP-DNA, RAP-RNA, WGBS, RRBS, and single cell data. The candidate will be motivated to learn and implement cutting-edge computational techniques, and will be excited to work with and develop teams within the lab.

A successful candidate(s) will have the following qualifications:
• PhD in a Biological or Computational Discipline
• Ability to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment
• Programming experience in Python and/or R
• Experience in analyzing genomics data and integrating different data types and a vast number of data sets
• Experience in establishing new methods and approaches

To apply please upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and provide names and contact information for 2 references. Start date is flexible.
