Project Scientist of Chemistry in Department of Chemistry
University of California Berkeley
United States

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Project Scientist (Assistant (I-VI), Associate (I-V), or Full (I - IX)), working at 50% time with an expected start date of September 2019.

About the UC Berkeley, Department of Chemistry – Jeffrey Long Group:

Research in the Long Group focuses on the design and controlled synthesis of novel inorganic materials and molecules toward the fundamental understanding of new physical phenomena, with applications in magnetism, conductivity, catalysis, molecular separations, and gas storage. We employ a range of physical methods to analyze and characterize our materials comprehensively, including by SQUID magnetometry, X-ray and neutron diffraction, various spectroscopic techniques, and gas adsorption analysis. Position Description:
Working closely with Prof. Jeffrey Long, the primary responsibilities of this position will be to make significant contributions in the training, development, and advisement of group members, and exploring the challenges related to synthesizing new molecule-based magnets.

The Project Scientist duties include:

• Designing and synthesizing molecule-based magnets, including single-molecule magnets, single-chain magnets, and framework-based bulk magnets.
• Designing and synthesizing network-based materials for applications in quantum information science, in particular targeting materials that encapsulate correlated electronic spin-based qubits.
• Designing and synthesizing nuclear magnetic resonance probes capable of sensing changes in physiologically relevant properties such as temperature, pH, redox potential, and metal ion concentration.
• Extensively characterizing the above materials using SQUID magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, electrical conductivity, and spectroscopic techniques including Mössbauer, EPR, NMR, and optical spectroscopies.
• Working closely with group members to train them in experimental practices, scientific writing, and presentation of their findings.
• Maintaining active knowledge and familiarity with research ongoing in the Long Group and relevant literature to best mentor group members as described above.
• Coordinating the composition of proposals to funding agencies, including assisting with seeking new funding opportunities as needed.
• Coordinating the dissemination of collaborative research with various groups at UC Berkeley and with external research groups, including manuscript preparation and formal reporting to various funding agencies as needed.
• Assisting the principal investigator in the mentorship of graduate and undergraduate researchers, writing articles for publication in scholarly journals, and presenting research findings at meetings and conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

Advanced degree or enrolled in advanced degree program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications:

PhD or equivalent international degree by the start of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Broad background in materials and inorganic chemistry, including, but not limited to, the synthesis and characterization of molecules and extended solids for applications in areas such as molecular magnetism
• 7+ years of directly relevant experience after completion of PhD
• Ability to work independently
• Extensive experience in the direct supervision of postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate researchers
• Extensive experience in scientific writing and editing
• A strong record in publishing research articles in a relevant area of science
• Success in obtaining independent research grants

The full-time salary rate range for this part-time (50%) position is $57,400 - $158,400 per year plus benefits.
