Job description

Job summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a highly motivated researcher to work as Research Assistant/Associate in the Molecular Systems Engineering (MSE) Group within the realm of part of the PETRONAS Centre for Engineering of Multiphase Systems The aim of the project is to develop a molecular model to study alkyl-polyglycoside (APG) surfactants to develop structure-property relationships. The main focus will be on performing interfacial tension molecular dynamics calculations of models of APG surfactants.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To perform a scoping study of the literature in search of previous patents, applications and experimental data referring to the use of APG surfactants

  • To develop molecular models and fine-tune intermolecular potentials capable of predicting interfacial properties of APG and similar carbohydrate-based surfactants.

  • To calculate the thermophysical properties, surfactant behaviour and self-assembly at the molecular level via Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations for selected families of APG, considering variations in the structural configurations of the surfactants.

  • To provide input to the surfactant structural design and to identify key features for experimental setups to test, develop and validate proposed surfactants in targeted applications.

  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times

  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings

  • To assist with the writing of reports to research sponsors

  • To prepare A/V material for regular telecons with research sponsors

  • To present findings to colleagues

  • To provide advice to other staff and students

  • To assist with the publication of findings

  • To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary

  • To develop contacts within the College and the wider community

  • To promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College

Essential requirements

You should have (or be in the process of completing) a PhD or EngD in Chemical Engineering or related discipline with a specialization in Theory and Simulation of Materials.
