Research Assistant I in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 495795) (to commence on  July 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter, on a one-year temporary term, or on a  two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal) 

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above in Physics, Astronomy,  Geography or a related discipline, with practical experience in Geographic Information  System (GIS) and data analysis on remote sensing imagery. They should have an excellent command of written and spoken English, and knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods.  They should also be highly self-motivated, detail- oriented and able to manage multi-task.  Applicants with experience in computer programming, astronomy research (in particular astronomical spectroscopy and image processing), and preferably light pollution or environmental pollution studies are preferred. The appointee will primarily work on the light pollution research using remote sensing and ground based measurement data.  He/she will perform data analysis, coordinate research logistics, develop the programme in controlling equipment, equipment calibration and testing, perform site visits in rural locations in Hong Kong for equipment maintenance and perform other duties as assigned.  The appointee will also produce visualizations accessible to the public, assist in the development of the project websites, assist in outreach activities, and (co)author research articles. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  The appointments on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary.
