About the role

  • $74K - $84K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role Research Assistant reports to Prof Naresh Kumar in the School of Chemistry and has no direct reports.


Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Analyse data of existing datasets and collect data on new experimental studies.
  • Optimise the chemistry for attachment of redox active compounds/catalysts (RACs) to activated carbons.
  • Employ advanced materials characterisation techniques, in collaboration with UNSW Analytical Centre staff, to confirm the formation of the materials with desired characteristics.
  • Synthesise a range of RACs with appropriate functionality for surface attachment.
  • Characterise the structures of the novel compounds using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and other spectroscopic means.
  • Assess the redox chemistry of modified activated carbon preparations using cyclic voltammetry.
  • Prepare reports including the introduction, experimental and discussion sections for supervisor review.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that their actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of others in the university.


About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A BSc (Hons) or MSc in surface chemistry.
  • Knowledge of organic chemistry and electrochemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis of surfaces using modern surface characterisation techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting a research project (including experiment design, data collection, and record keeping).
  • Excellent laboratory skills and with experience in a range of organic chemistry techniques.
  • A track record of high-quality academic or industrial research in relevant disciplines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
