Job Reference : S&E-13738

Salary : £32,236 - £39,609 per annum (according to experience)
Employment Type : Fixed Term
Faculty / Organisational Unit : Science & Engineering

Hours Per week : Full Time
Contract Duration : 01 June 2019 until 30 November 2021

The University of Manchester is involved in two major experiments to use aircraft measurements of atmospheric aerosols to understand their effect on important parts of the atmosphere.  In the first of these, the University of Manchester was supported by NERC (£937K, South West Asia Aerosol Monsoon Interactions, SWAAMI) to characterize particulate across northern India during the pre-monsoon and monsoon onset and investigate their effect. The work involved measurements made on the UK Research aircraft in 2016 and the data analysis remains ongoing.

In the second major experiment the Centre of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Manchester will lead the characterization of aerosol particles from the UK research aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean to assess changes in aerosol resulting from reductions in sulphur emissions from shipping from January 2020.  These changes result from restrictions being placed on the level of sulphur from shipping fuel by the International Maritime Organization.

You will be responsible for preparing and operating the University of Manchester Aerosol instrumentation on the UK research aircraft during two airborne field experiments based out of northern Spain or Portugal during 2019 and 2020 as part of the ACRUISE project. You will carry out data analysis of both the ACRUISE and SWAAMI data with a view to delivering novel scientific outputs.
