Department

A fixed term postdoctoral appointment is available, for up to 36 months, in the Department of Chemistry, to work in the groups of Professors Gideon Grogan and Ian Fairlamb. You will conduct research on enzyme-catalyzed amide bond formation, with an emphasis on the engineering of enzymes for the scaleable synthesis of pharmaceutical amides. The work is funded by the EPSRC and is supported by GSK. The post is available from I October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful departments at York and we are renowned internationally for our research. As a department, we strive to provide a working environment that allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We are proud of our Athena SWAN Gold Award.

Role

You will focus on research on enzyme-catalysed amide bond synthesis, specifically research into novel classes of amide bond forming enzymes for the synthesis of pharmaceutical amides. You will employ synthetic organic chemistry, gene cloning, expression, mutation and analytical techniques to characterise novel enzyme activity and look to develop scaleable processes for enzyme-catalysed amide bond formation.

Where appropriate you will:

  • conduct individual and collaborative research projects
  • assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of research proposals
  • provide guidance to other staff and students, as required, as well as coordinating the work of small research teams

  • A good knowledge of and enthusiasm for contemporary research in applied biocatalysis
  • Skills in synthetic organic chemistry skills, gene cloning and protein production and analytical techniques associated with organic chemistry.
    • Experience of conducting independent and collaborative research projects and working as part of a harmonious research team
    • Highly developed communication skills, both orally and in writing, including publication in journals and competency to deliver presentations at conferences
