Role Description


The role holder will  work in the groups of Profs Anne-Kathrin Duhme-Klair and Keith Wilson in the Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with Dr Steven Johnson in the Department of Electronic Engineering. The project is funded by the EPSRC (UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) to develop modular and recyclable artificial metalloenzymes that combine the reactivity of synthetic organometallic catalysts with the selectivity and biocompatibility of proteins. Key components of the role are the immobilisation of artificial metalloenzymes on solid supports, substrate screening, product analysis, and the optimisation of reaction conditions, followed by incorporation of the immobilised enzymes in continuous flow systems.

  • To conduct individual and collaborative research under the supervision of Prof Anne-Kathrin Duhme-Klair, Prof Keith Wilson and Dr Steven Johnson on the development of immobilised artificial metalloenzymes:To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects
    • Design and characterisation of artificial enzymes with affinity tags and their immobilisation on solid surfaces, such as IMAC resins or planar substrates inside microfluidic chips
    • Substrate screening, product analysis and the optimisation of reaction conditions
    • Incorporation of the immobilised artificial enzymes in continuous flow systems, both on an analytical and preparative scale
    • Analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods
  • Write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations and outreach activities
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students, as well as coordinating the work of small research teams
  • To assist with undergraduate teaching in own area of expertise

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree and PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biophysics
  • Knowledge of protein chemistry, protein immobilisation techniques and enzyme catalysis
  • Skills in protein handling and protein purification
  • Competency and experience in protein handling and affinity chromatography
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Ability to write up research work for publication
  • Ability to develop research objectives , projects and proposals for own and joint research
  • Highly motivated, collaborative and professional work ethic, committed to high quality research, and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students
  • Ability to work closely with others within a team environment and to work independently using own initiative
  • Commitment to personal development and understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion
