Research Associate in Chemistry University of Virginia, Department of Chemistry United States

The University of Virginia, Department of Chemistry, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the group of Professor Michael Hilinski.

The field of study will be synthetic organic chemistry. The specific research project is focused on the development of novel organocatalytic methods for C-H oxidation that are useful for the late stage functionalization of complex bioactive small molecules. In addition to standard synthetic techniques including anhydrous and air-free techniques, this project will rely on the use of various analytical methods such as NMR, gas chromatography, HPLC, IR, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography both for routine product characterization and mechanistic studies.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field is required in order to apply. Candidates are required to have extensive experience in synthetic organic chemistry as documented by first author or equivalent publications in organic or general interest chemistry journals. Some experience in studying the mechanisms of catalytic reactions is preferred. Candidates are expected to play a leadership role in the laboratory as a mentor for both graduate and undergraduate students, and to assist in laboratory operations, such as the maintenance of equipment and instrumentation. Effective oral and written communication skills are also essential for this team-based project.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UVAJobs  and attach a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for 3 individuals who can provide letters of recommendation.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on July 12, 2019, but the position will remain open until filled.

This is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
