Job description

Job summary

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher in antibody discovery to join the Aprile group at the Department of Chemistry of Imperial College London.

Antibodies are powerful biomolecules, which find a wide application in biomedical research and the clinic. Our group focus on the development of antibodies to study disease mechanisms. In particular, we are interested in developing and using antibodies to understand the mechanisms of formation and toxicity of pathological protein aggregates called amyloids, whose deposition in the nervous system is linked to dementia.

Duties and responsibilities

As part of our team, you will play a key role in characterising the effects of post-translational modifications in the formation of amyloids. In particular, you will generate post-translationally modified amyloid proteins and antibodies that specifically bind to them. You will employ these antibodies to develop new approaches to determine whether these modifications are protective or exacerbate the toxicity of the amyloids in in vitro and ex vivo models of diseases.

Essential requirements

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant STEM discipline

You must also meet the following criteria:

• A strong background in chemical biology and biochemistry

• Knowledge of antibody discovery techniques

• Experience in antibody-based detection assays (i.e. ELISA)

• Excellent communication skills, able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Further information

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477-£38,566 per annum

This position is full time fixed term for 24 months ( with a potential further extension of 12 months)

Start date: late October/ early November 2020

The College believes that the use of animals in research is vital to improve human and animal health and welfare. Animals may only be used in research programmes where their use is shown to be necessary for developing new treatments and making medical advances. Imperial is committed to ensuring that, in cases where this research is deemed essential, all animals in the College’s care are treated with full respect, and that all staff involved with this work show due consideration at every level.
