Job summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a research associate to develop electrochemical devices for energy conversion and storage. The project is funded by the European Research Council Starting Grant (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/851272). This project will be carried out within the Functional Membrane and Energy Materials Group (www.imperial.ac.uk/song-group), led by Dr Qilei Song.

Duties and responsibilities

The main role of the post holder will be to carry out research in application of ion exchange membranes in electrochemical devices, such as redox flow batteries, fuel cells, and water electrolysers, which will play important roles in future grid scale energy storage. The project will combine newly developed ion exchange membranes and ionomers with electrocatalysts and study the electrochemical energy conversion and storage performance.

The successful candidate will also undertake project management and/or supervise multi-disciplinary teams. The project will involve collaborations with several research groups within Imperial College, UK universities, international collaborators, as well as industrial partners.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate should have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or other related area and a strong foundation on electrochemistry and electrochemical devices.

Experience in electrochemistry and electrochemical characterization is essential; Experience in electrochemical devices such as flow batteries, fuel cells or water electrolysers is highly desired.

Experience in developing battery materials and characterization is desirable.  

Experience in developing ion exchange membranes is desirable.

The successful candidate should also be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work on interdisciplinary project and collaborate with partners.

Further information

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 – £39,888 per annum.

The post is available from 1 March 2022 for 18 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension, and will be based in the South Kensington Campus.
