Job description

Job summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the comparative assessment of greenhouse gas removal (GGR) technologies within the Centre for Environmental Policy within Imperial College London. The post will be based at the South Kensington Campus.

This post is part of the multidisciplinary project Quantifying and Deploying Responsible Negative Emissions in Climate Resilient Pathways funded through H2020, working with Dr Niall Mac Dowell in the Centre for Environmental Policy. This is an ambitious 4-year project aimed at addressing the knowledge gaps in the development of technically feasible, financially viable, societally equitable deployment as part of a future net zero emission economy.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be working on one work package of the NEGEM project and will build upon the existing MONET framework [1, 2, 3] for the equitable comparison of GGR technologies, evaluating their technically feasible, financially viable, societally equitable deployment as part of a future net zero emission economy.

The work will entail the further development and integration of a suite of models describing canonical greenhouse gas removal (GGR) technologies, and hence developing a comprehensive framework for their inter-comparison at the EU-regional scale – MONET-EU. This work also includes the evaluation how GGR technologies will interact with the rest of the energy system, and thus you will be required to link the MONET-EU framework with the ESO framework [4, 5]. Finally, the integrated MONET-ESO framework will be further linked with the JEDI toolkit [6, 7]

A key part of this project is its close collaboration with colleagues in the Mac Dowell research group as well as colleagues in other universities and industrial collaborators in order to integrate the outputs of other work packages with this one. You will therefore be expected to closely interact with their colleagues in these other departments and will be expected to assume a leadership role within the project.

Essential requirements

You must have a PhD or equivalent qualification in an appropriate science or engineering subject, preferably related to the areas given above, or relevant experience working in an allied area.

You are required to demonstrate by your application and at interview that you have a proven track record in conducting high level research as evidenced by innovative publications in peer reviewed journals (commensurate with career stage).

Experience using equation orientated process modelling, simulation and optimisation software, e.g., MATLAB, gPROMS or ASPEN Custom Modeller, and in the application of advanced optimisation techniques to detailed mathematical models using, e.g., GAMS or AIMMS, is essential. Similarly, data curation and analysis skills using, e.g., Python or R are required.

You should also have the ability to give oral presentations of scientific material of clarity and coherence and have exceptional technical and scientific writing ability with proven track record in peer reviewed publication in the international scientific literature (commensurate with career stage).

Further information

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum.

This is a fixed term position available for 24 months.
