The High Energy Physics Group at Imperial College London invites applications for a Research Associate position to study the physics of neutrinos and related areas of particle physics.

We are looking for someone to take a leading role in ensuring that the T2K ND280 detector systems, which are about to be upgraded with the arrival of several new subdetectors, are able to operate correctly and effectively in forthcoming T2K data-taking runs. Beyond fulfilling this responsibility, you would be free to pursue analysis work in any area of T2K physics.

Duties and responsibilities

The research programme will be conducted in Imperial's Blackett Laboratory as well as at J-PARC and Kamioka in Japan and other research laboratories and collaborating institutes worldwide.

Imperial is a leader in neutrino oscillation analyses, neutrino-nucleon interaction analyses and the design, construction and running of the ND280 detector systems. We are searching for a candidate who will allow the group to continue its role in the evolution of ND280, including the new Upgrade detectors, as well as its record of performing analysis work in many aspects of T2K. In addition to contributing to the continual improvement of T2K, the group also has significant roles in the COMET muon-to-electron conversion experiment which will be receiving beam shortly, and in Super-K, which is being upgraded with the addition of Gadolinium. Opportunities will be present to take advantage of the synergies across these to further contribute to the activities of the group.

Essential requirements

You will hold a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or have an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience.

You must have the following essential criteria:

  • Familiarity with HEP data analysis techniques, including Monte Carlo techniques and statistical analysis
  • Experience of software development and use, particularly C++
  • Experience in leadership or evidence of future leadership potential
  • A strong research record with clearly defined individual contributions
  • Experience in taking initiative and/or developing own ideas independently

In addition, it would be desirable if you had:

  • Experience with hardware and/or detector operations in a HEP environment
  • Experience of working on the design and construction of HEP detectors
  • Experience of working in the environment of a large international science collaboration

Further information

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.

The post is available for two years in the first instance.

The post will be based in London but will require regular travel to J-PARC and Kamioka in Japan. Other UK and foreign travel is likely to be required.

The Imperial College High Energy Physics Group has a strong ongoing experimental programme encompassing the T2K, Super-Kamiokande and future Hyper-Kamiokande experiments in Japan; the future neutrino oscillation experiment DUNE at Fermilab and SURF in the USA; the search for sterile neutrinos with SoLid in Belgium; the search for charged lepton flavour violation with COMET in Japan; the CMS and LHCb experiments at the LHC; the search for dark matter with the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment in the USA; the MICE experiment in the UK; and SHiP and SuperNEMO activities and the development of future experiments. There are also significant accelerator, phenomenology and Grid computing programmes.
