Research Associate in Organic Chemistry
University of Cambridge Department of Chemistry
United Kingdom

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate to work with Professors Christopher Hunter and David Klenerman in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge to work on an MJFF programme to develop new ligands that target misfolded proteins involved in neurodegenerative disorders. The appointees will join a multidisciplinary team of several post-docs and PhD students based in Cambridge combining expertise in supramolecular chemistry, organic synthesis, polymer chemistry and computational chemistry.

The aim of the project is to develop the next generation of probes for misfolded pathogenic proteins in humans focusing on the development of specific markers for oligomeric forms of these proteins. The project will involve the synthesis of libraries of ligands and testing their binding affinity for alpha-synuclein aggregates. The most promising compounds will be developed for pulldown assays on patient samples. The main focus of the role is the design and synthesis of new compounds, and the appointee will interact with other members of the team for biological testing.

Applicants should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in chemistry. Experience in some or all of organic synthesis, supramolecular and biophysical chemistry is required. The appointee will be expected to give oral presentations on their work, write internal reports and produce draft publications, and relevant communication skills are required. In addition to their own research, the appointee will be expected to take some responsibility for the supervision and training of post-graduate and undergraduate research students and for the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
