Department and Position

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work jointly with Professors Andrew Weller and Simon Duckett for a period of up to 24 months. The project will focus upon using solid-state molecular organometallic techniques (SMOM) and advanced NMR methods to isolate and characterise organometallic complexes of xenon. The post is full time (with flexibility if required) and is available from 1st January 2021.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful academic departments at York, placed in the top ten UK for Research Power by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF). Role

  • To conduct individual and collaborative research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research, specifically:
    • To develop new single-crystalline molecular organometallic systems (SMOM) to synthesise, characterise and then exploit organometallic complexes of xenon
    • To characterise xenon complexes using advanced NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal x-ray diffraction
    • To apply a wide variety of techniques to resolve structure, bonding and reactivity in organometallic systems, often in collaboration with other centres of excellence.
    • Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects
    • Analyse data and write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations and outreach activities
    • Provide guidance to other staff and students, as well as coordinating the work of small research teams
    • To assist with undergraduate teaching in own area of expertise

  • First degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Organometallic Chemistry (or have submitted a PhD thesis prior to taking up appointment)
  • Knowledge, understanding and ability to demonstrate competence and success in the thesis research area
  • Demonstrated experience of single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy and skilled in air-sensitive synthetic organometallic chemistry
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Ability and experience in writing up research work for publication
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and funding proposals for own and collaborative research
  • Highly motivated, collaborative and professional work ethic, committed to high quality research, and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students
  • Ability to work closely with others within a team environment across two research groups and to work independently using own initiative
  • Commitment to and understanding of equality and diversity
