Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance. A position exists for Research Assistant / Research Associate in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics in the group of Prof. N. R. Cooper. The role holder will work on the theory of quantum many-body systems. Areas of current interest within the group include topological phases of matter, light-matter interactions, far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics and open quantum systems. Much of the work within the group is motivated by experimental developments. The group benefits from having a wide network of experimental collaborators and colleagues working on electronic materials, cold atomic/molecular gases, and photonic systems. The role holder will be able to work closely with Prof. Cooper and will be given significant opportunities to help set the research directions and to establish an independent research profile. The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Physics or a closely related discipline, with a proven track record in the modern theory of condensed matter physics. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the areas of current interest outlined above, as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of analytical and/or computational methods is required. The candidate will also have the ability to work within a team, and to present research background, techniques, and results clearly and effectively. The post holder will be located at the Department of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0HE. Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263 (Grade 7). Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed as a Research Assistant (Grade 5, Point 38 - £32,982) moving to Research Associate (Grade 7) upon confirmation of your PhD award.
