Fixed-term for 29 months to start as soon as possible.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and creative experimental chemist to join our multidisciplinary polymer team to explore mixed ion diffusion in mixed polymer-nanoparticulate systems. These systems have direct relevance to commercial coatings as used in construction, marine and sustainable energy generation. The project will focus on the diffusion pathways in crosslinked polymer networks that are highly dosed with corrosion inhibiting particles and nanofillers. The key synthetic aspect will craft novel epoxy networks with controlled chemical topology, tailored interfaces by surface chemistry and tracer diffusion probes. Your lead will be important in setting the direction of this diverse project.


You will work in our team, in the Department of Chemistry, and with our friends and collaborators in Physics and Mechanical Engineering in Sheffield; with the School of Materials at the University of Manchester and the industrial sponsor. You will need to lead the synthetic chemistry effort and determine how controlled epoxy-based networks can be created and how their physical chemistry can be explored. We expect the physical chemistry will include measurements of diffusion and permeation, water activity and ageing but we are looking to you to provide the lead in both the synthetic and physical chemistry aspects.

You will already have a PhD or be close to completion in Chemistry, Materials, or a related discipline (or have relevant, equivalent experience). You will be able to plan and undertake research, both independently and as part of a team; develop techniques and methods. The work will be diverse, with the opportunity of working with a wide range of engineers and scientists. You may be required to travel to undertake experiments at large-scale facilities. There will be opportunities to attend national and international conferences, to present your work at the highest level and to contribute to the future of a major UK industry.


This is a fixed term role available for 29 months, with a start date as soon as possible.
