Research Associate in Polymer Chemistry/Science
University of Sheffield, Department of Chemistry
United Kingdom

Contract Type: Fixed-term for 24 months with a start date as soon as possible.

Are you interested in making a difference by performing high quality science with industrial relevance? We have an exciting opportunity for a talented polymer chemist/scientist with a passion for sustainability.

You will join the expanding team of an EPSRC Manufacturing Fellow investigating new functional polymers which target both high performance and improved environmental outcomes. Your main technical goal will be to propose and undertake new monomer/prepolymer/polymer synthesis (polyurethanes, polyesters and acrylics) to form cross-linked polymer networks which are reversible under defined conditions. With experience in both polymer synthesis and physical polymer science you will lead the synthetic chemistry effort, determine how new reversible networks can be created and how their physical chemistry can be explored. You will generate critical structure-property relationships on new materials which both provide a unique fundamental insight and have direct relevance to specific applications.

This is a great opportunity for you to develop a senior role within the group, providing leadership as a professional scientist - including supervising/mentoring other students. While being based in the Department of Chemistry, you will collaborate in our collegiate environment at Sheffield with our colleagues in Physics, Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. You will also collaborate externally with Industrial Partners.

You will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Chemistry, Materials or a relevant field (or have equivalent experience). You will be able to plan and undertake research, both independently and as part of a team; develop techniques and methods. There will be opportunities to attend national and international conferences, to present your work at the highest level and to contribute to a more sustainable future.

This is a fixed term role available for 24 months initially, with a start date as soon as possible.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to the greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
