Nucl. Med., 2019, 1750; Chem. Sci., 2019, 5603). The project forms part of an exciting large-scale initiative with the University of Hong Kong and Peking University. With funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission, the Laboratory for Synthetic Chemistry and Chemical Biology has been created at the University of Hong Kong. Imperial College is a lead collaborator with the Laboratory and several research programmes, including this one led by Prof Long, will be housed in the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College (other PIs are Profs Tate, Vilar and Fuchter) but connected to the Laboratory. There will be opportunities for collaboration, travel and research placements in Hong Kong. The research aims to develop a range of new biomedical imaging probes focussing on diseases such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s. The project will have two facets (i) to explore the use of dual-modal imaging probes (e.g. a combination of MRI, NIR fluorescence and PET/SPECT) towards therapeutic zinc and other metal sensing models and (ii) designing new lipophilic cationic molecules for imaging of the mitochondria – this could again feature dual-modal techniques or targeted single modalities such as PET (e.g. 68Ga, 18F radiolabelling). The research will involve a range of synthetic inorganic and organic chemistry, alongside biomedical imaging and analysis. Duties and responsibilitiesWe are looking for someone with a range of synthetic chemistry (inorganic and organic) experience and skills in imaging sciences. This role will encompass varied responsibilities, including work on a wide range of collaborative projects. You will develop new chemistry and chelators and use them to develop dual-modal imaging agents, metal sensors and radiometal-based mitochondria imaging agents. In addition, you will perform preclinical research in biomedical imaging, ideally including in vitro and in vivo biological studies and one or more imaging modalities (e.g. optical, MRI, PET and SPECT, CT). This work will involve collaborations with research groups across Imperial College and the University of Hong Kong and drive the development and translation of bioimaging probes in a range of disease types.
