Research Associate in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2023 in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research assoicate to work in the group of Dr. Robert Phipps in the Department of Chemistry on a project funded by the European Research Council.

This project will involve developing new methodology to enable the control of regioselectivity in radical functionalisation reactions of aromatic rings. We have recently developed an approach to control regioselectivity in the radical amination of arenes in which non-covalent interactions guide an incoming aminium radical to the arene ortho position (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2021, 143, 9355). This project will involve building on those initial findings to explore the application of this approach to a range of different radical arene functionalisation reactions in the first instance. We also envisage that this fundamental approach could be used for addressing the challenge of the controlled functionalisation of aliphatic C-H bonds and this is a further possible area of exploration for the successful applicant.

Applicants should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry. Experience in modern synthetic techniques in a leading research environment is essential, ideally in the development of new methodology. A strong track record of achievement during the PhD is desirable. There may be some flexibility in the start date for an outstanding applicant. The appointee will be expected to give oral presentations on their work, write internal reports and produce draft publications, and relevant communication skills are required. In addition to their own research, the appointee will be expected to take some responsibility for the supervision and training of post-graduate and undergraduate research students and for the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
