Job description

Job summary

A Research Associate position has become available in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London.

The aim is to develop a new class of wearable electronic devices based on inks and composites of layered materials, their hetero structures and hybrid platforms, combining the versatile properties of layered materials with fibres and textiles. Such devices will then be integrated into textile-based devices and used in a wide range of applications, such as biosensors, optoelectronic and energy devices.

This is an ambitious research programme, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across flexible electronics, device physics, electrical engineering and nanotechnology, aiming at the realization of novel devices for several applications such as the Internet of Things, Body Area Networks, Healthcare and Wellbeing devices and Smart fabrics.

Duties and responsibilities

You will have the opportunity:

• To take initiative in the planning of research for the rapidly emerging area of wearable and textile electronics

• To direct the work of a small highly motivated research team composed of undergraduate and postgraduate students

• To identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data for novel fibre-based and textile electronic devices

• To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times

• To prepare material for presentation in oral and poster formats

Essential requirements

You must hold a PhD (or equivalent ) in Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Nanotechnology or Engineering.

In addition, you must meet the following criteria:

• Proven track record in formulation dispersion (including of graphene and two-dimensional materials), inks and polymer composites

• Knowledge of functionalisation techniques and processes of graphene and two-dimensional materials, surface functionalisation of 2D materials and hybrid polymer composites.

• A solid understanding of chemistry of polymers and nanomaterials, electronics and optoelectronics and the physics of graphene and related 2D materials

• Possess research experience in the discipline, methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

• Experience of managing own workload and working in close collaboration with experimentalist, handing collaborations within industry projects, including reporting and attendance to project meetings

Proven track record in flexible and stretchable electronic and optoelectronic devices with graphene and 2D materials, as well as stretchable and elastic coatings and fibres is desirable.

Further information

Maximum salary on appointment is £40,215 per annum.

This contract is full time fixed term for 14 months with the possibility of  further 3 months extension.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum
