Research Associate (Postdoc) as Research Data Manager

linked to the local coordinator Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Norbert Pietralla of the cluster project ELEMENTS that is funded by the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art. The position is initially a fixed-term appointment corresponding to the four-year term of the ELEMENTS projects from 01.04.2021 to 31.03.2025.

The Institute for Nuclear Physics at TU Darmstadt presently comprises 15 research groups with about 250 members performing research in the areas of theoretical and experimental physics, nuclear astrophysics as well as laser and plasma physics. The institute is one of the largest of its kind world-wide and enjoys high international reputation.

The cluster project ELEMENTS is a joint endeavor of the Goethe University Frankfurt, TU Darmstadt, Justus-Liebig University Gießen and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy-Ion Research. It aims for the investigation of neutron star properties and their mergers with electromagnetic and gravitational-wave signals and the synthesis of heavy chemical elements. Experimental programs regarding these topics will be conducted at the accelerator facilities of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Physics and the electron accelerator S-DALINAC at TU Darmstadt.

The holder of the position is expected to combine the existing activities regarding research data management (RDM) at the partner institutions in ELEMENTS with the concepts and funding opportunities throughout Germany. She/He will be in charge to develop a unified concept of RDM for the research projects within ELEMENTS and to integrate it into the existing setting complying with the requirements of politics and funding agencies. The concept is also supposed to be a con-vincing and innovative foundation for the future application for an excellence cluster in the next round of the federal excellence strategy. The incumbent is meant to train the research groups of the participating institutions in RDM and to support them, e.g., by developing instructional material, so that RDM will be established as part of the research process at the beginning of the fourth year of the term of the cluster project.

The holder of the position shall contribute to the integration of the RDM concept of the cluster project in the activities for RDM at the partner institutions and to support them in view of the requirements of a future application for an excellence cluster in the domain of ELEMENTS. Furthermore, she/he is expected to participate in the preparation and defense of additional third-party funding applications. Another goal of the position is to disseminate the RDM activities of the cluster project on national and international levels by presentations and publications in the area of research data management.

It is expected that the appplicant can provide evidence of a sound knowledge and experience of several years in the area of scientific research with a completed doctoral degree. Furthermore, outstanding skills and a track record in the recording and analysis of significant data volumes as well as the development of suitable databases are presumed. Work experience at international research facilities is a benefit.

Distinct skills in communication and authority are required to achieve the ambitious aims. Verified evidence for experience in the training of personnel in the scientific area and the management of projects is appreciated.
