Research Fellow in Biomaterials and Drug Delivery

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in biomaterials and drug delivery? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Fellow funded by an EPSRC New Investigator Award to develop novel drug implants with controllable drug release kinetics to reduce brain cancer recurrence after surgery.

You will use methods established by Dr Zhan Yuin Ong’s group to synthesise organic-inorganic hybrid porous silica nanoparticles, prepare nanoparticle assemblies and hydrogel formulations, study drug release, and evaluate the safety and efficacy of the novel anticancer drug-loaded formulations in patient-derived glioblastoma cell models. You will join a dynamic and vibrant interdisciplinary research environment in Dr Ong’s lab which is part of the Molecular and Nanoscale Physics Group, and be supported through strong collaborations with cancer biologists and clinicians in Dr Heiko Wurdak’s and Dr Ryan Mathew’s groups at the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St. James’s, School of Medicine. This post provides an exciting opportunity for a proactive and ambitious individual to work at the intersection of biomaterials development, brain cancer biology, and neurosurgery to improve outcomes for brain cancer patients.

You will have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Pharmacy, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Science or a closely related discipline, and have significant experience in biomaterials development, drug delivery, cell culture, and in vitro biocompatibility testing. Experience in the synthesis and characterisation of porous materials is highly desirable. A strong publication track record in internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals or evidence of publishable research in progress is essential. You will benefit from access to state-of-the-art research facilities as well as dedicated career development and mentoring schemes at the University of Leeds.
