Research Fellow in Plant Biophysics and Biomechanics

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in Cell Biophysics and/or Biomechanics? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join the , funded by a UKRI Future Leader Fellowship to work on the project ‘PDWallMech: Harnessing PlasmoDesma Wall Mechanics for plant biotech and biomaterials’. Your work will involve a number of structural and mechanical technologies applied to hydrogels and biomechanical characterization of Plasmodesmata/ plant cell wall. You will develop a framework for the exploitation of wall polymers as bioplastics and for applications in biomedical technologies. You will be trained on mechano-physical and structural characterization of materials and cell walls including those that relies on microscopy. You will also learn to develop mathematical models for plasmodesmata biomechanics. You will work alongside PhD students and staff on the project and are expected to take a lead role in the research. Together we will work on the identification of targets to modify plasmodesmata permeability in models and crops aiming for new strategies for crop improvement.

You should have a PhD (or close to completion) in Biological and/or Physical Sciences or a closely allied discipline with experience in biophysical measurements and a strong background in structural and cell biology. Experience in techniques to measure the mechanical/physical properties of cells is highly desirable.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies.
