The NIF Radiochemistry Fellow will work with the Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) and Herston Imaging Research Facility (HIRF)/ Queensland – The Radiopharmaceutical Centre of Excellence (Q-TRaCE)

CAI is a strategic initiative of The University of Queensland, reflecting the growth in biotechnology, biomedical and materials research requiring advanced imaging capabilities. As a leading imaging research facility in Australia, and one of a handful in the world, CAI brings together the skills of a critical mass of researchers and ‘state-of-the-art’, world- or Australian-first research imaging instruments. NMR, EPR, MRI, PET, CT and optical imaging are now key platform research technologies for studying the structure and function of biomolecules and living organisms, from proteins to the human. The radiochemistry facility at CAI includes an IBA 18 MeV twin cyclotron (including a solid target station), 14 Hot cells, F-18 and C-11 synthesis modules, a radio-iodine processing unit and capabilities of using a range of radiometals.

Herston Imaging Research Facility and Q-TRaCE

The HIRF is situated within Australia's largest hospital precinct, the Herston Hospital Campus in Brisbane, Queensland.  HIRF is one of only a handful of dedicated imaging research facilities based on a hospital site in Australia. The facility has been built to cater for the growing role of imaging in clinical research. It gives researchers unprecedented access to high-quality imaging equipment and allows the rapid translation of research into clinical practice.  With its cutting edge scanning technology in PET/CT, PET/MR and MRI, HIRF has the potential to revolutionise patient care in the areas of dementia and ageing, mental illness, brain development and cancer.

Q-TRaCE is part of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. It is the largest Nuclear Medicine department in Queensland and operates two PET scanners, four SPECT/CT cameras, cardiac stress testing, radionuclide therapy facilities and the only cyclotron in QLD Health. A wide portfolio of radiopharmaceuticals, including theranostic pairs for diagnosis and therapy are produced onsite for clinical or research use. Q-TRaCE maintains a monitored clean room for the manufacture of sterile injectable radiopharmaceuticals and holds a TGA license (for [18F]FDG and [18F]F-. The laboratory houses 15 hot cells, a variety of modules for the automated manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals, sterile dispensing capability, a comprehensive suite of analytical instrumentation for quality control testing and dedicated infrastructure for implementing novel tracers.

National Imaging Facility

The National Imaging Facility (NIF) is an Australia wide collaborative network of world-class imaging infrastructure, which was established in 2007, one of the four initiative projects implemented by the Australian Government, under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) Characterisation capabilities program. NIF provides state-of-the-art imaging capabilities for the imaging of human, animals, plants, and materials and consists of 10 Nodes (Queensland, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, Western Sydney University, The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Large Animal Research & Imaging Facility, University of Melbourne, Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology, and University of Western Australia) together with ANSTO, as a national partner in radiophysics and radiopharmaceuticals.

Connecting Researchers with Infrastructure, NIF provides cutting-edge imaging technologies and highly specialized expertise in three main themes of:

  • Molecular Imaging and Radiochemistry;
  • Human Imaging; and
  • Animals, Plants, and Materials Imaging.

About This Opportunity

As the successful candidate you will support preclinical and clinical tracer production at the Queensland node of NIF, jointly between the radiochemistry labs CAI and HIRF/Q-TRaCE.

A key focus of the role is to drive the expansion of the number of radiotracers (both diagnostic and therapeutic) available to researchers and clinicians and to promote NIF activities to the international, national and institutional scientific community.

You will contribute to authoring, revising and implementing documentation as part of a Pharmaceutical Quality System for radiotracer production to support preclinical and clinical research programs.

This position is based at the St Lucia Campus and Herston Campus.

Our Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate, you will have a PhD/DPhil in Chemistry, Radiochemistry or related discipline and at least 3 years of experience in radiochemistry or radiopharmaceutical science.

You will have experience in the automation of radiotracers, particularly the automation of fluorine-18 radiochemistry processes. You will have expertise in development and validation of quality control methods for radiotracers.

Experience with radiometals, C-11 radiochemistry and radio-iodine chemistry, as well as experience working in a clean room environment, aseptic technique and operating according to Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMP) practices will be beneficial.

It is a condition of employment for this role that you might be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 4 years at Academic Research level B or C.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Academic Research Level B will be in the range $97,590 - $115,888, plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $114,181 – $135,590.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Academic Research Level C will be in the range $119,548 – $137,846, plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $139,871 – $161,280.
