The Opportunity

The Faculty of Science is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic academic to take the role of a Research Fellow. The ARC SRIEAS Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future is an international research program which will deliver interdisciplinary research to forecast environmental change across the Antarctic region, to deploy effective environmental stewardship strategies in the face of this change, and to secure Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.

This position is expected to contribute towards the research efforts of the University and to develop their research expertise. The position will be responsible for designing and delivering research outcomes, publications and other research-related tasks on the changes in Antarctic, Southern Ocean and sub-Antarctic populations, species and communities, with a particular emphasis on spatio-temporal change in a conservation context.

Some of the key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Experimental design, spatio-temporal statistical analysis, computer modelling and systematic review
  • Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise
  • Development of a limited amount of research-related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate guidance from other staff
  • Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected with
  • The preparation of proposals for additional funding for research

The key attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate will include:

  • A doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and proficiency in the production of high-level work using software such as R, Matlab, Covidence and/or other applications, with the capability and willingness to learn new packages and techniques as appropriate
  • Demonstrated expertise in the analysis of population, species and/or community temporal and/or spatial change in a conservation context and its underlying theory
  • Demonstrated expertise in connecting population and community level change projections to conservation outcomes
  • Demonstrated analytical and manuscript preparation skills; including a track record of refereed research publications in the very best general research outlets and discipline-specific outlets

The position will commence from Monday 3 July 2023, with some flexibility.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
