Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI)

One of UQ’s eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 200 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, water and mining, social responsibility, and safety and risk management.  SMI is industry-focused and consequently works with many leading global resources companies and many small-medium enterprises and suppliers. SMI interacts strongly with governments and community. A priority for SMI is the development of talent and providing an environment for successful and rewarding careers.

SMI was founded in 2001 and since its inception has established a reputation as a unique institution for integrated sustainable development research in the resource sector. SMI is a truly global institute with staff and students from around the world. SMI’s people are also diverse in their discipline backgrounds, which range across disciplines including anthropology, geology, soil science, sociology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering and mine management.

About This Opportunity

As Research Fellow your primary purpose will be to engage in research and teaching that furthers the development of the Institute’s Complex Ore Bodies program, as well as performing research, administrative and other activities associated with the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM).

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing a contextual understanding of the critical social, geographic, geological, economic, environmental and regulatory aspects associated with resource development projects, markets and emerging global initiatives
  • Manage a variety of different cross-centre data sets using ArcGIS and other data management platforms
  • Preparing research reports, drafting journal articles, and presenting results and research findings to a range of difference audiences – research organisations, industry, government and civil society
  • Service major industry-research partnerships, such as with Rio Tinto, MMG, Oceana Gold, Newcrest and UQ-Industry consortiums, in particular the Social Aspects of Mine Closure Research Consortium and the Mining and Resettlement Consortium.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

In addition to holding a PhD in the area of Human Geography, Landscape Ecology, Economics or a related field, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Expert knowledge of GIS, high quality mapping and data visualisation products and tools 
  • An ability to establish relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies
  • Strong knowledge of the social and environmental aspects of mining and sustainable development
  • Evidence of a contribution to research, including working on successful external grant applications
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary environment.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term (12 month) position at Research Academic level B.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $ $97,590 – $115,888 plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $114,181 - $135,590.
