Location: Clayton campus

Employment Type: Full-time

Duration: 3 year fixed-term appointment

Remuneration: $68,040 - $92,343 pa Level A (plus 17% employer superannuation)

  • Rewarding postdoctoral research position in theoretical astrophysics
  • Innovative and creative research environment
  • Perform world-class research at Monash University, one of Australia’s top research universities

The School of Physics and Astronomy is committed to teaching and research of the highest quality in astronomy, astrophysics, experimental physics, and theoretical physics. Major areas of research in astrophysics include: astrostatistics, astrophysical fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, galaxy evolution, first stars, stellar evolution, stellar nucleosynthesis, nuclear astrophysics, chemical evolution, galactic archaeology, supernovae and supernova remnants, neutron stars, stellar transients, black holes, high-energy astrophysics, gravitational-wave astronomy, stellar and planetary dynamics, and exoplanets.

The Opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in the area of theoretical astrophysics. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research in the group of Professor Ilya Mandel, which covers a variety of areas including:

  • Gravitational-wave astrophysics and the astrophysical interpretation of exciting new data on binary neutron star and black hole mergers
  • Modelling massive stellar and binary evolution
  • The interpretation of high-energy astrophysical transients, including tidal disruption events and gamma ray bursts
  • Stellar dynamics
  • Astrostatistics

The fellow will join the OzGrav Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery. Among other research directions, the fellow will contribute to exploring the science case for third-generation gravitational-wave detectors.

The ideal applicant will hold a PhD in astrophysics, or a closely related field.

Equity and Diversity

The School of Physics and Astronomy is strongly committed to improving the diversity of our staff and students, and promoting a culture of equity, fairness, respect and openness. In 2015 the School received a Bronze Pleiades Award – Recognising Commitment to Advancing Women in Astronomy. This is an important first step in affirming women within the School, one that we can build upon, as the University engages in addressing the Athena Swan Charter. Consequently, women are especially encouraged to apply for this position. Monash University is invested in increasing the representation of women in the fields of physics, nanoscience and materials engineering. Applications from female candidates are highly encouraged.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. Some positions at the University will require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check.
