Duties and responsibilities
  • Participation in research, development and creative activities under the supervision of a professor or associate professor.
  • Research at internationally recognised level, including projects, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Development of skills necessary for research, development and creative activities, and professional development.
  • Teaching primarily students of the first and second level of higher education using modern teaching methods and educational technology.
  • Supervising students of the first, second and third level of higher education.
  • Professional development to enhance teaching and supervising skills.
  • Participation in the development activities related to curricula development.
  • Popularisation of the specialisation.
  • Participation in the work of the university’s decision-making bodies if necessary.
Required qualifications
PhD or an equivalent qualification.
Required experience
  • Ability to participate in organising research, development and creative activities in the specialisation.
  • Internationally recognised professional research in geoinformatics, the volume of which so far is equivalent to that of at least one doctoral thesis.
  • Experience in teaching geoinformatics using modern methods and supervising students at BSc and MSc level.
  • Participation in international conferences and networks in the field of geoinformatics.
  • Very good teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with desktop GIS programs.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automating large GIS processing workflows with a programming language, preferably Python and Bash/Shell.
  • Experience in working with spatial databases, such as Postgres/PostGIS and Spatialite/GPKG.
  • Very good knowledge of spatial data standards (OGC).
  • Very good knowledge of spatial data infrastructures (SDIs).
  • Experience in participation in the international networks of geoinformatics, understanding of scientific code and data curation best practices.
  • Experience in popularisation of the specialisation.
  • Recommended: experience in geospatial big data processing on HPC cluster (with job schedulers such as SLURM) or in the cloud (Google Cloud Platform or Amazon AWS).
Required language skills
Excellent command of English for professional communication and research. Understanding basic Estonian is an advantage. According to the Language Act, academic staff with foreign citizenship working in Estonia must have acquired at least B1-level Estonian language skills after five years of work. The Centre for Professional Development offers foreigners and their family members the opportunity to participate in Estonian language courses.
