The SOC group in the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) at the University of Amsterdam is recruiting a Research Technician for supporting an exciting and multidisciplinary research. 

 

What are we looking for

 

We are looking for a technician, who is highly motivated and open to work in a high multidisciplinary environment. You must have, at least, finished a HBO with chemistry background with a special focus on organic chemistry. Previous experience in the field of organometallic chemistry is an advantage. You are willing to share your expertise with the other group members as well as being open to acquire new knowledge from them. Ability to work independently (after an initial training) and laboratory trouble-shooting is highly required. Good communication skills in oral and written English is necessary.

 

What are you going to do

 

  • Carry out routine and custom research in organic chemistry (i.e. synthesis of starting materials);
  • In collaboration with other group members, develop new synthetic methods based on metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization and electrosynthesis; 
  • Exhibit the highest degree of reliability and accuracy to assure quality and reproducibility of results;
  • Keep updated with the latest relevant literature related to the own research project;
  • Participate in research discussions, including own research involvement;
  • Contribute with the supervisor to the initial laboratory training of new team members (masters, PhD candidates, visiting scientists from academia and industry, etc.);
  • Instruct (in collaboration with the supervisor) PhD and undergraduate students to the good practice in laboratory work and maintenance of a safe working environment;
  • Perform daily management and organisation of the laboratory;
  • Keep updated to novel equipment and processes and advice the supervisor about their innovation and possible applications into our research programme;
  • Schedule of instrument usage and responsibilities of team members;
  • In collaboration with other analysts, contact suppliers and ordering consumables and instrument parts when required.

 

What do we have to offer


This position fits within the job profile 'Technicus onderwijs en onderzoeksgebonden O 4' and is classified in scale 08. This means a gross monthly salary between € 3,072.- and € 4,103.- for full employment (38 hours per week) excluding holiday pay (8%) and end-of-year bonus ( 8.3%). Classification depends on competencies and work experience. The Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities applies. 


The UvA has an extensive package of secondary employment conditions, including:

  • 232 holiday hours per year (based on fulltime) and extra holidays between Christmas and 1 January;
  • Multiple courses to follow from our Teaching and Learning Centre;
  • Multiple courses on topics such as time management, handling stress and an online learning platform with 100+ different courses;
  • 7 weeks birth leave (partner leave) with 100% salary;
  • Partly paid parental leave;
  • The possibility to set up a workplace at home;
  • A pension at ABP for which UvA pays two third part of the contribution.
     

We offer a temporary employment contract for 32-38 hours per week for a period of 12 months, with a two months probation time. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible. If we assess your performance positive, a permanent contract will follow.

Research is organized into four themes: Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Synthesis & Catalysis and Molecular Photonics.

The Synthetic Organic Chemistry (SOC) group is part of the Synthesis and Catalysis theme, which is a Research Prority Area (RPA) of the University of Amsterdam. The RPAs represent the excellence of UvA in terms of research and worldwide recognition.
