Researcher in Combustion Physics and Chemistry

Lunds universitet, LTH, Fysiska institutionen

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics.

Division of Combustion Physics is well-established and internationally recognized for excellence in the measurement and development of combustion applications related to ground and aerospace combustion engines and energy production.

An overall objective of the running project supported by Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) is to strengthen the links between experimental and modeling studies of premixed flames.  Laminar premixed flames can be efficiently modelled using detailed kinetic schemes with proper isolation of chemical and physical aspects affecting flame structure and flame propagation.

This project includes both experimental and modeling research.  Experiments are performed on flat flame burners, which facilitate comparison with the modeling.  Pertinent flames are studied experimentally in our labs using heat flux method and Laser induced fluorescence, while other experiments from literature, e.g., ignition and flow reactor studies are also analyzed.  Detailed kinetic modeling of these experiments will aim at (1) model validation, (2) model development and improvement.

The focus of the present project is on alternative fuels, including bio-fuels.  The study of any system to be investigated starts with detailed analysis of available experiments and existing kinetic models from the literature.  The problem is then formulated with selection of appropriate diagnostic techniques available at the Division of Combustion Physics, Lund University.  Dedicated experiments are then performed and compared with existing or new models.  When required, additional experiments are set up to address possible uncertainties or doubts.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a researcher posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

  • Ability to independently design and carry out research projects related to flame studies.
  • The research is to a large extent interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experiences from relevant areas of physics and chemistry are of special value. This may include, yet not limited to: quantum chemistry calculations, chemical kinetic studies, research in engines, laser diagnostics in combustion.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a researcher position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience in chemical kinetic modeling of combustion
  • Experience in laboratory studies of laminar flames
  • Programming and data processing skills
  • Journal publications in the field.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
