Date: Jun 3, 2023

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 10710

Overview:

The Physics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking an exceptional experimental R&D Staff Member with an excellent instrumentation, physics, and management background to join the Relativistic Nuclear Physics (RNP) Group in the Fundamental Nuclear and Particle Physics Section of the Physics Division.

The Relativistic Nuclear Physics Group has a strong track record of developing large scale instrumentation for particle and nuclear physics experiments and leading impactful physics analyses in the field. The group is currently collaborating on the ALICE Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where it has recently completed the construction of the readout upgrade of the Time Projection Chamber and contributed to the construction of the ALICE silicon-based Inner Tracking System based on monolithic active pixel sensors. In collaboration with the sPHENIX Experiment at RHIC, a similar tracker has been developed for which ORNL led the development of the streaming readout electronics. Additionally, the group is heavily committed to the design and construction of the ePIC Detector for the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC) situated at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The group recently joined the heavy ion physics program of the CMS Experiment at CERN working on the construction of a new low-gain avalanche diode-based timing detector. The focus of this position will be to lead the ORNL involvement in the EIC physics program and contribute to the success of the international EIC program through the construction and management of the ePIC detector. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the other areas of research within the relativistic nuclear physics group. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the long-term strategy of the group and develop relationships with appropriate sponsors in federal agencies. In addition, the candidate will contribute to research to conceptualize, develop, and demonstrate novel sensor technologies for nuclear physics detectors.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the ORNL physics research at the Electron Ion Collider
  • Take on a leading role in the management, design and construction of major subdetectors for the EIC and work closely with the teams across the laboratory to realize the projects
  • Collaborate with the ORNL Relativistic Nuclear Physics (RNP) team members in the design, proposal, funding, development, and construction of new experiments and new detector systems at the Electron Ion Collider
  • Participate in the other activities in the RNP group, in particular the projects at the LHC
  • Guide and manage physics analysis team efforts on existing and future experiments or projects
  • Contribute to the investigation and development of proposed agendas for future research initiatives
  • Develop new business opportunities and develop relationships with appropriate sponsors in federal agencies
  • Contribute to research to conceptualize, develop, and demonstrate novel sensor technologies for nuclear physics
  • Represent the ORNL RNP group and its mission properly within the laboratory and scientific community
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
  • Integrate diversity, equity and inclusion in daily work
  • Promote an equitable, inclusive research environment
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and health regulations
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Nuclear Physics or a closely related discipline (e.g. nuclear chemistry or particle physics) with a minimum of 12 years of experience past PhD conferral

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An excellent record of leadership in relativistic nuclear physics, including notable publications in peer-reviewed journals and invited presentations at major conferences in the field or management of major research portfolios.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of instrumentation for particle and nuclear physics experiments
  • Experience leading the development of innovative detector technologies
  • A creative and productive member of the international physics community with proven skills in team leadership and personnel organization
  • A thorough understanding of and existing relationships with the relevant federal government agencies including, but not limited to: DOE/NP, DOE/HEP, DOE/NNSA
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory

Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

Three letters of recommendation are required and ought to be sent to psdrecruit@ornl.gov with the job title/requisition number in the subject line.
