Let’s Shape the Future – University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking European university. We provide innovative academic education to more than 20,000 students, conduct cutting-edge scientific research, and play a leading role in providing services to society. With over 6,000 employees representing 100 nationalities, we work together to build a better tomorrow. Through top-tier scientific research, we push boundaries and chart the course for the future—and you can help shape it.

The Vision Lab within the Department of Physics (Faculty of Science) and the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology within the Department of Biomedical Sciences are seeking a full-time (100%) Senior Researcher in Whole-Brain Light-Sheet Microscopy.

Position

You will contribute to the ERC Consolidator Grant project “A data-driven approach to microstructure imaging” (ADAMI), funded by the European Union. ADAMI brings together expertise from physics and engineering (MRI and light-sheet microscopy interpretation), biological and medical sciences (neuroscience and brain microstructure), and computer science (machine learning and AI) to advance predictive microstructure imaging with MRI.

Your primary responsibilities include developing and optimising an integrated image analysis pipeline to quantify neural and glial cell composition across brain regions using in toto light-sheet microscopy of healthy and neurodegenerative mouse brains.

You will be embedded in both the Vision Lab (image processing and analysis) and the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology (light-sheet microscopy). As a postdoctoral/senior researcher, you will also help coordinate the project and assist in supervising PhD students.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Physics, or a related field.

  • You hold or are willing to obtain a FELASA certificate, and you are willing to work with laboratory mice.

  • You have a strong track record in light-sheet microscopy acquisition (including preparation, clearing, and immunostaining), curation, and/or processing, as evidenced by high-quality peer-reviewed publications.

  • You can write custom image processing and analysis routines in Python, MATLAB, or C++.

  • Experience in state-of-the-art artifact correction, registration, segmentation, and (shape) analysis of microscopy images—and in integrating these into efficient pipelines (e.g., via bash or Python)—is considered a strong asset.

  • Your research qualities align with the faculty and university research policies.

  • Your teaching competencies align with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.

  • You demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, and strong cooperation skills.

  • You have excellent written and spoken English proficiency.

What We Offer

  • A full-time senior researcher contract for 1 year, renewable up to 3 years pending positive evaluation.

  • A competitive salary according to the pay scale for a Principal Research Fellow in the Contract Research Staff category (Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).

  • Additional benefits including ecocheques, an internet allowance, group insurance, income protection insurance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement for public transport commuting.

  • A planned start date of March 2026, with flexibility.

  • A dynamic and stimulating work environment at Campus Drie Eiken.

  • More information about working at the University of Antwerp can be found on their website.
