Research Component

The Project Scientist will serve as Deputy Project Manager of the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) Node of the NASA Planetary Data System (PDS). In this role, he works as a data scientist, a position requiring expertise in both the space plasma physics and information technology. In particular, the Project Scientist will actively work on the design of metadata standards for planetary science data and on studies involving magnetic field observations from the planets. The Project Scientist will lead the data processing for the NASA Europa Clipper magnetic field investigation. The Project Scientist will lead the data processing for the magnetometer on the Mars INSIGHT mission.

Supervisory Component

The Project Scientist will direct the day-to-day activities of the PPI Data Engineers including oversight of the metadata design and the ingestion of data into PDS (see the team organization chart). The Project Scientist will represent the PPI Project Manager on the NASA PDS Management Council when the Project Manager is not available. The Project Scientist will serve on the NASA PDS Change Control Board (currently chair). The Project Scientist will serve as a representative to the International Planetary Data Alliance and the Planetary Subcommittee of the International Virtual Observatory Alliance.

The Project Scientist reports directly to the PPI Principal Investigator (Project Manager).

Creative Contributions

The Project Scientist will take the lead in developing long-term (6-year) plans for planetary data management. As noted above, the Project Scientist will be directly involved in creating new metadata standards for planetary data. The Project Scientist will lead the design of the data processing systems for magnetic field observations from forthcoming NASA missions. The Project Scientist will actively engage in the research with those data. The Project Scientist will provide scientific advice to NASA missions, PDS and PPI.
