Senior Lecturer in Chemistry

Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry (Nfak)

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 45 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for a position as senior lecturer (associate professor) in analytical chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry at Lund University (KILU) is a joint department for chemistry within the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering (LTH). KILU offers high-quality education in all areas of chemistry, closely integrated with research. The department also houses the advanced instrumentation required for modern molecular research. In total, KILU employs approximately 270 individuals, including around 100 doctoral students. Nearly 500 full-time students participate in undergraduate education each year. The total annual economic turnover is approximately 400 million Swedish Kronor (SEK).

The Department of Chemistry consists of four research centres: Centre for Molecular Protein Science (CMPS), Centre for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS), Centre for Applied Life Sciences (CALS) and the Centre for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. Analytical chemistry as an undergraduate and graduate subject is found at CAS, and it is in this unit that the advertised position will be placed.

Currently, the department is planning its future together with the Department of Physics and Nanoelectronics, in terms of relocation in new facilities at Science Village. Science Village is an area in the Brunnshög district in northeastern Lund that includes MAX IV, ESS, Vindarnas Park and central Science Village. The move means that the department is facing exciting opportunities for renewal and modernisation of research and education. New laboratories will be built, and analytical chemistry plays an important role in such development.

Job description
We are looking for a senior lecturer who has a strong research profile in analytical chemistry. Since the successful candidate is expected to be teaching both undergraduate and graduate levels courses in analytical chromatographic theory, it is an advantage to have teaching and user experience in analytical chromatography.

The position entails primarily research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research will be conducted on at least 60 % of full time. The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research and teaching, may change over time.

The person is expected to develop an active research programme within the area and related areas, which also includes active work in applying for external funding and developing collaborations with university units and other governmental authorities and organisations, involved in this type of research.

The teaching comprises courses on all levels within the field, as well as supervision of Bachelor, Master and doctoral students.

The department will financially support the new research group at Lund University. One doctoral student or postdoc position will be funded by the department, and relocation support will be provided. See contact details below for further information.

Qualified for an appointment as a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) is a person who has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a doctoral degree or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve (according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

For this position, it is required that the applicant holds a doctoral degree in the field of analytical chemistry or an equivalent subject area relevant to the position.

It is a requirement to have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In certain cases exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For teachers at Lund University, the general eligibility requirement is to be suitable for and have the ability in general that is needed to perform the duties well.

Basis of assessment
The applicant must have documented scientific expertise in analytical chemistry, and this will primarily be assessed based on the quality of independent peer-reviewed scientific publications.

The applicant must present their current research and a research plan for the upcoming years, including how this can contribute to the research at the department.

The applicant must have documented experience and ability to teach and develop courses in their own and related areas, at both basic and advanced levels, including doctoral education.

The applicant must have documented experience in supervising thesis projects and doctoral students.

Today, the extent of research and doctoral education strongly relies on the individual researchers' skills and ability to attract external funding. Therefore, it is required that the applicant has a documented ability to secure research grants in both national and international competition.

Merits for the position include:

Ability to teach and supervise thesis projects and doctoral students in analytical chromatography.

Documented experience in communicating science and the significance of research to society.

In addition, importance will be placed on how the applicant, through documented skills and experience, can strengthen and supplement the Department´s research and teaching in this field.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.

Design and content of the application
We would recommend you to write your application in English, since it will be assessed by international experts. The application should be formulated according to the Faculty of Science’s Instructions for applications for an academic position. Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Science. The Faculty is organized into eight departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.
