Subject area description

We are searching for a Senior Lecturer to join the art conservation section who would contribute to our expertise in the area of the conservation of organic materials. This may be wood, textiles, leather, skeletal remains, plastics, paper or other organic materials. It is noted that for the purposes of this position, we are not seeking experts in painting conservation.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a high-level research program with emphasis on organic materials and participate in the undergraduate and graduate level teaching in conservation at our department. We expect the successful candidate to strengthen and complement the research performed at our section. We are particularly interested in enhancing our research areas in conservation of organic materials (as described above).

We are committed teachers with extensive and broad experience in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education in conservation of cultural heritage. We are continuously seeking opportunities for pedagogical improvement. Our ambition is to teach conservation at the highest international level.

Job assignments

We are recruiting a senior lecturer in the field to strengthen the department’s research and teaching in the conservation of organic materials. As a successful applicant you will be expected to:

demonstrate a strong commitment to teach various courses in conservation of organic materials and general conservation courses, lead a research program in conservation with emphasis on organic materials, demonstrate a strong commitment to supervise students (in the laboratory and at undergraduate, MSc and PhD levels), undertake administrative tasks for the Department of Conservation including managing course budget in collaboration with Degree coordinators actively pursue external funding.

You should actively seek challenges and new opportunities in order to develop your work. Communication and collaboration skills are important since many of your duties will be carried out in collaboration with other colleagues and museum professionals. You are expected to collaborate with actors outside academia, for instance, in collaborative research or museum and community outreach activities.

If you have no courses in University teacher’s training, you are expected to take such courses within two years from the start of the employment. The university offers courses in teaching and learning in higher education.

Eligibility

The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. The applicant should have a PhD in Conservation. Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience of practical conservation work in any of the subjects described above. Experience of working with multiple and inorganic materials will be considered an advantage.

The applicant must be able to teach and publish in English in Swedish within two years.

Assessment

The assessment of your application will be based on your scientific skills and pedagogical merits, which will be given equal weight. Both parts will be equally important for the final assessment.

When assessing your scientific competence, special attention is paid to publications of high quality. Quality bears greater weight than the accumulated output of scientific papers. Research with important contributions after your PhD degree as well as international scientific collaboration are considered as strong merits.

When assessing your pedagogical merits, special emphasis is placed on your ability to plan and teach courses in conservation.

We value collaboration, work ethic and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team in conservation. We expect the applicant to have good communication and collaboration skills. Personal qualities that we also like to see are strong initiative, creativity, enthusiasm, ability to work towards deadlines and a positive attitude to teaching and students.

We will choose the applicant who, after the overall assessment of skills and potential, is considered to have the best prerequisites to carry out the tasks included in the job description, to collaborate with others, and to contribute to a positive development of activities at the department. The overall assessment will also assess how the applicant’s qualifications and plans complement and strengthen the activities in accordance with the strategy of the department.

Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the University of Gothenburg, interviews and guest lectures. The assessment of qualifications and experience will take into account parental leave, sick leave or other similar circumstances.
