Position Description

The Quantitative Biology Initiative in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The QBio Initiative emphasizes novel approaches to fundamental problems in the life sciences and fosters interactions across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Candidates in any area of quantitative biology will be considered, including those taking computational, theoretical, and/or experimental approaches. We are particularly interested in candidates bringing new perspectives to our campus community who might not fit into traditional academic disciplines.

The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment in a FAS Science department and/or in the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Potential appointments include Applied Math, Applied Physics, Bioengineering, Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials & Mechanical Engineering, Molecular & Cellular Biology, Organismic & Evolutionary Biology, Physics, Statistics, and Stem Cell & Regenerative Biology. Faculty associated with the Initiative will have access to our multi-disciplinary research community as well facilities and opportunities for collaborative research not only through academic departments/areas but also through the Life Sciences Core Facilities, the Center for Nanoscale Systems, and the Broad Institute.

Timeline: Completed applications should be received no later than October 4, 2019. Interviews will be held within the first two weeks of December 2019. The finalist (s) will return for a second visit in January/February 2020 to meet with relevant departments, chairs, and deans.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates are required to have a doctorate or terminal degree in a relevant discipline by the expected start date. We seek candidates who have a strong research record with the potential to contribute substantially to our understanding of living systems and the potential to positively impact our campus community.

• Research Statement (3-5 pages): Summary of previous research accomplishments & proposed research program. Note: The search committee has members from across the life, physical, computational and engineering sciences. Please make it clear what foundational biological question you propose to answer, how you propose to do it, and how your research program will advance our understanding of living systems. 
• Teaching Statement (1-2 pages): What do you want to teach at Harvard? What are your strategies? Why is teaching important to you? How do you plan to improve?
• Diversity Statement (1-2 pages): Statement describing efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging, including past, current, and anticipated future contributions in these areas.
• PDFs of up to 3 publications 
• References (3-5): Names and contact information. References will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required for the application to be considered complete. At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral advisor.
